Move My Heart

Study time: Daniel

Daniel lived his life as if God were with him every single day and hour. When it would have been easy to think God had abandoned him and His people, Daniel lived his life as if, even in the midst of silence, God was with him.

When the time comes for me to go through the fire, will I respond the same way? When my faith is tested and my back is against the wall, will I respond in the same fashion Daniel did?

Can I? Will I?

Even though it is never recorded that Daniel every offered sacrifices to God, or participated in the holy festivals, or partook of a Passover meal, his heart was in the right place. Through God’s messenger, Gabriel, Daniel is said to be highly esteemed (Daniel 9:23). Highly esteemed! Not because of the formalities, but because of the direction of his life – because of his pursuit of God.

When news came to leave God out of his life – he could not and would not (Daniel 6:10). It wasn’t an option. He refused to let go of God. When his back was against the wall and he was facing the mouths of lions, he refused to give in. He lived like God was with him.

Do I?

Do I live like God is with me every single hour of every single day? Do I honor the Creator of the Universe – the One who holds in His hand my life and my ways (Daniel 5:23)? It makes you think doesn’t it?

It is through those tough times that Daniel’s mind must have returned to those words of David many years before: The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies (Psalms 18:2-3).

Is he my fortress, my rock, my refuge?
